Why ordinary bean bags fail outdoors in the UAE

Three things kill an outdoor bean bag in Dubai. UV breaks down ordinary polyester and cotton covers, so colours fade and the fabric goes brittle within a season. Water gets in through the zip or the seams, sits in the beads and turns to mildew. And heat: a dark, airless bag on a stone deck gets too hot to sit on by mid-morning. The fix is not a thicker cover; it is the right fabric, a way for water to get out, and beads that do not hold heat.

Choosing the fabric colour for a Dubai garden

Lighter Sunbrella colours stay cooler to the touch on a July afternoon; sand, stone and pale grey are the practical choices for an uncovered deck. Darker navy and charcoal look sharp under a pergola or on a shaded terrace. Patterned Sunbrella hides dust between washes. Caring for an outdoor bean bag in the UAE

• Hose the cover down and let it drain through the mesh base; dry in shade where possible.

• For stains, use mild soap, or diluted bleach on Sunbrella for mildew; rinse well.

• Unzip and wash the outer cover once a season.

• Bring the bag under cover during sandstorms if you can; the fabric is fine, but sand works into zips.

• When it sits lower than it used to, book a refill. Outdoor bags compress a little faster than indoor ones because they are lain on rather than sat in.
