Marine grade is the toughest standard a fabric can meet: it must shrug off relentless UV, salt spray, standing water, mould, and constant abrasion — the exact conditions of a boat berthed in Dubai Marina in August. If a fabric survives at sea, a beachfront terrace or poolside daybed is easy. That is why we recommend marine-grade fabrics not only for yachts, but for any furniture within reach of salt air or pool chlorine.

What “marine grade” actually means

A true marine fabric offers three things ordinary outdoor fabric does not. First, maximum UV stability — marine acrylics like Sunbrella’s marine range carry the brand’s longest warranties precisely because they are built for permanent, unshaded exposure. Second, mould and mildew resistance even in permanent humidity, thanks to fibres that absorb almost no water. Third, salt resistance: salt crystals are abrasive and corrosive, and marine fabrics and their UV-stable threads are engineered to tolerate them.

The two families of marine fabric — and when to use each

Marine acrylic: breathable, cool to sit on, fade-proof. Best for seating cushions, biminis and covers where comfort matters. Water-repellent and fast-drying rather than fully sealed.

Marine vinyl: fully waterproof, wipe-clean coated fabric used for helm seats, jet-ski seats and high-splash zones. Modern marine vinyls are UV-stabilised and far cooler to the touch than older generations.

Frequently asked questions

Is marine-grade fabric overkill for a villa terrace?

Not if you are near the sea or a pool. Salt air reaches much further than the beachfront, and chlorine splash destroys ordinary fabric. For inland gardens, standard performance upholstery grades are usually sufficient — we will advise honestly.

Vinyl or acrylic for my boat seats?

Exposed helm and swim-platform seating: vinyl. Shaded seating and anything you sit on for hours: acrylic. Most boats need both, and we quote them together.

How long does marine fabric last in the UAE?

Quality marine acrylics are warranted for up to 10 years against colour and strength loss; realistically they outlast two or three sets of cheap covers even in permanent sun.
