What is a bean bag, and what is inside it?

A bean bag is a large fabric sack filled with thousands of tiny expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads. Each bead is a hollow ball of foam that is about 98 per cent air, which is why a bean bag big enough for an adult still weighs only a few kilograms. The beads flow around you when you sit, so the bag moulds to your body instead of pushing back the way a sprung sofa does. That is the whole appeal: no frame, no springs, nothing to break, and a seat that fits whoever drops into it.

Ours have two layers. The inner liner is a zipped calico bag that holds the beads, so the outer cover can be unzipped and washed, or swapped for a new fabric years later, without a single bead escaping. The outer cover is the fabric you choose from our upholstery fabric library for indoors, or Sunbrella for outdoors.

Polystyrene beads vs shredded foam: which is better?

Polystyrene beads are the standard fill for a reason. They are light, they flow, they stay cool in a Dubai summer, and a refill is cheap. Shredded memory foam is heavier, sits firmer and keeps more of its loft, but it holds heat, costs more, and makes a large bag too heavy to drag across a room. For a family bean bag that gets moved around, beads win. For a very firm gaming-chair feel, foam has a case. We fill with virgin EPS beads of 3 to 5 mm, which pack more evenly than cheap recycled beads and take longer to compress.

Why bean bags go flat, and what to do about it

Every bean bag flattens with use. Each time you sit, the beads compress a fraction, and after a year or two of daily use a bag can lose a quarter of its volume. The fabric is fine; the fill just needs topping up. That is normal, and it is why we offer a bean bag refill service in Dubai: bring the bag to Al Quoz or we collect it, and it goes home full again the same day.

Bean bag sizes: who fits what

• Standard (about 80 to 90 cm across) – one adult sitting upright, or two small children. Our Standard Bean Bag is this size.

• Large (about 100 to 110 cm) – one adult reclining, the family-room favourite.

Because we make them, none of these are fixed. A corner of a majlis, a narrow balcony, a reading nook under the stairs: tell us the space and we size the bag to it.

Indoor bean bags: fabric choices

For indoor bean bags the main decision is fabric. Linen and cotton blends look relaxed and breathe well. Velvet and chenille feel luxurious and photograph beautifully. Bouclé is the current favourite for living rooms. Every cover is removable and zipped, and most are machine washable or dry cleanable.

Outdoor bean bags: built for the UAE sun

Cheap outdoor bean bags fade, rot and split within one Dubai summer. Ours are covered in Sunbrella marine-grade fabric, the same solution-dyed acrylic used on yacht cushions, with a mesh drainage panel underneath and a sealed inner liner. How much do bean bags cost in Dubai?

At Adams Furniture, made-to-order bean bags start from AED 950 for a standard indoor bag in a stock fabric and go up to around AED 1,800 for large and outdoor bags in Sunbrella. The final price depends on the size and the fabric you choose; a premium velvet or a printed Sunbrella sits higher than a plain cotton. Refills are priced by the litre of beads needed. Supermarket bean bags cost less, and last one season; ours are made to be refilled and recovered for years.

Bean bags vs floor seating

If you are furnishing a majlis or a family room and want low seating that keeps its shape, compare a bean bag with made-to-order Arabic floor seating and floor cushions. Foam floor sofas hold a straight line along a wall; bean bags are better for lounging in the middle of the room. Many of our clients use both, with custom cushions to tie the fabrics together.

Are bean bags good for Dubai homes?

Yes. Bean bags suit air-conditioned villas and apartments well because polystyrene beads do not hold heat, the covers are washable, and they can be moved between rooms or out to a covered terrace in minutes. For uncovered outdoor areas, choose a Sunbrella-covered outdoor bean bag.

How long does a bean bag last?

A well-made bean bag with a quality cover lasts many years. The beads compress with use and usually need topping up every one to two years, which is a quick, inexpensive refill rather than a replacement.

Can I wash a bean bag cover?

Yes, if it has a separate inner liner, which all Adams bean bags do. Unzip the outer cover and wash it according to the fabric; the beads stay sealed inside the liner.

Are polystyrene beads safe?

The beads are inert and safe in normal use, but they are a choking hazard for small children and a nuisance if spilled. That is why the inner liner on our bean bags has a lockable or stitched-closed zip, and why refills are best done by us rather than at home.
