What size should an end of bed bench be?

The bench should feel in proportion with the bed. As a guide, choose a bench about two thirds to the full width of the mattress, and never wider than the bed frame:

• 200 x 200 cm UAE super king: a bench of about 140 to 200 cm.

• 180 x 200 cm king: a bench of about 120 to 180 cm.

• 160 x 200 cm queen: a bench of about 110 to 160 cm.

For depth, 40 to 50 cm is comfortable to sit on without crowding the walkway. Seat height should be about 45 cm, at or just below the top of the mattress, so the bench does not hide the bed. Then leave 60 to 75 cm in front of the bench so you can walk past and sit down easily.

Storage bench or open bench?

The biggest decision is whether you want storage. A storage bench has a lift-up padded seat over a hidden compartment, which is ideal for spare duvets, throws, cushions, shoes or children's toys. Look for gas-assisted hinges or stays, which hold the lid open safely and stop it slamming shut. An open bench on legs looks lighter, is easier to move, and lets you see the floor underneath, which makes a smaller bedroom feel bigger.

Choosing a fabric for a bedroom bench in Dubai
