What makes a fabric genuinely kid- and pet-proof

Look for four properties. Stain resistance built into the fibre, not sprayed on — solution-dyed fabrics like Sunbrella’s upholstery range can even take diluted bleach, which means slime, ketchup and marker come out. A tight, flat weave with no loops for claws to hook — avoid loose bouclé with pets and choose tight flatweaves or dense-pile velvets instead. High abrasion ratings — for family sofas we specify fabrics tested to 30,000+ Martindale rubs, well above the everyday-use threshold. Easy-clean technology — modern systems from brands such as Aquaclean® and FibreGuard® release most household stains with just water.

Can stains really be removed with bleach?

On genuine solution-dyed acrylic like Sunbrella, yes — diluted bleach is manufacturer-approved and will not strip the colour. On other performance brands, soap and water handles most household stains.

Is performance fabric comfortable, or does it feel plasticky?

Modern performance fabrics are nearly indistinguishable from ordinary linen, velvet or bouclé textures — the protection is in the fibre, not a coating you can feel.
