A canopy bed is a four poster bed with a frame or rails joining the tops of the posts, usually dressed with fabric. Most four poster beds can be turned into a canopy bed later by adding a canopy frame, so you do not have to decide on day one.

What ceiling height do you need for a four poster bed?

This is the most important question to answer before you buy. As a rule, leave at least 30 to 40 cm between the top of the posts and the ceiling. Less than that and the bed starts to feel squeezed into the room.

Most four poster beds have posts of around 210 to 230 cm. The Williamsburg, for example, has 226 cm posts at the headboard and 206 cm posts at the footboard, and the Ebonized Oak stands 220 cm tall. That means a ceiling of about 2.6 m or more is comfortable. Many Dubai villas have ceilings well above this, so a full-height four poster looks right at home. In apartments with lower ceilings, choose slimmer posts or ask us to shorten them, which we can do on any bed we make.

Room size and mattress size

Four poster beds take up more visual space than a standard bed, so give them room to breathe. Allow 60 to 75 cm of walking space on both sides and at the foot of the bed. As a guide:

• 200 x 200 cm UAE super king: a room of roughly 4 x 4 m or larger.

• 180 x 200 cm king: a room of roughly 3.6 x 3.8 m or larger.

• 160 x 200 cm queen: a room of roughly 3.4 x 3.6 m or larger.

Adding a canopy or drapes

If you love the romantic look of a draped bed, we can add a solid wood canopy frame across the tops of the posts. In Dubai we recommend sheer linen, cotton voile or muslin rather than heavy velvet. Light fabrics let the air conditioning circulate around the bed, look fresh in bright light and are easy to take down and wash. For a cleaner, modern look, leave the posts open and let the wood do the work.

Wood, joinery and care in Dubai's climate

Tall posts put a lot of leverage on the corners of a bed, so how the bed is built matters more than with a standard bed. Look for solid hardwood such as oak, teak or walnut, and for mortise and tenon joints at the corners rather than metal brackets alone. This keeps a four poster bed rigid and quiet for decades.

To care for a solid wood four poster bed, dust it with a soft dry cloth, avoid harsh chemical sprays, and keep it out of strong direct sun and away from AC vents, which can dry the wood and fade the finish. Upholstered headboards can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment.
