How to Choose an Outdoor Umbrella in Dubai: Type, Size, Base, Fabric and Frame
Updated: Oct 26
Buying an outdoor umbrella in Dubai comes down to five decisions: type, size, base, canopy fabric and frame. Get those right and the umbrella lasts ten summers; get one wrong and it is in the skip after the first shamal. This is the checklist we use when specifying outdoor umbrellas in Dubai for villas, hotels and restaurants.
1. Choose the type
Centre pole for lounger rows and tables with a hole; cantilever for sofas, daybeds and dining where the pole would be in the way; double canopy or giant for terraces and pool decks. The full breakdown is in our guides to types of outdoor umbrellas and centre pole vs cantilever.
2. Size the canopy
Shade shrinks as the sun moves, so size the canopy about 60 cm larger than the furniture on each side. A 2.5 to 3 m umbrella covers a four-seat table or a pair of sun loungers; a 3.5 to 4 m canopy covers six to eight seats or a daybed. Above 4 x 4 m you are into giant umbrellas.
3. Match the base to the umbrella and the site
Centre pole, sheltered villa garden: 40 to 60 kg base.
Centre pole, commercial or exposed: 90 to 180 kg base, or a ground sleeve.
Cantilever, any site: 100 kg or more, or a ground-fixed mounting plate.
Beach: screw sand anchor or concrete sleeve socket, never a loose base. See beach umbrellas.
Pool deck: a flush mounting plate set into the slab is the safest option. See swimming pool umbrellas.
4. Pick the canopy fabric
Solution-dyed acrylic is the only fabric we recommend for Dubai. The pigment is in the fibre, so colour holds under relentless UV and the canopy dries quickly after rain or splashing. Standard canopies are ecru beige; custom colours and logo printing are available for hotels, restaurants and beach clubs.
5. Pick the frame
Teak gives the classic resort look and silvers naturally; it is heavier and ideal for Balinese and classic schemes. Aluminium is lighter, will not rust and is easiest to move. Our Italian cantilever and giant umbrellas use aluminium; our Classic, Rope Teak and Bali models use teak. Avoid painted steel near the coast or a pool.
6. Check wind rating and warranty
Ask for a wind rating with the base specified: our heavy-duty cantilevers are rated to about 60 km/h, centre poles higher. Look for a manufacturer's warranty with parts in Dubai; ours is 2 years with service support from Al Quoz.
7. Set the budget
Teak centre pole umbrellas run AED 1,800 to 2,700, Italian cantilevers AED 7,950 to 9,850, giant and motorised umbrellas are quoted per project. Every figure is in our outdoor umbrella price guide.

Frequently asked questions
What size outdoor umbrella do I need?
Allow about 60 cm of canopy beyond the table or lounger on every side: a 2.5 to 3 m umbrella for a four-seat table or two loungers, 3.5 to 4 m for six to eight seats, and giant umbrellas above that.
How heavy should an umbrella base be?
Roughly 40 to 90 kg for a centre pole umbrella and 100 kg or more for a cantilever, with ground anchorage or a mounting plate for exposed or commercial sites.
Which canopy fabric is best for Dubai?
Solution-dyed acrylic. The colour is dyed into the fibre, so it resists UV fading and dries quickly; polyester canopies fade within a summer.
Teak or aluminium umbrella frame?
Teak for a classic resort look that silvers with age; aluminium for a lighter, rust-free frame that is easy to move. Both suit coastal Dubai; avoid painted steel.
Do I need an umbrella with a tilt?
Only on a cantilever used through the afternoon. Tilt and 360° rotation let one umbrella follow the sun; centre pole umbrellas rarely need it.
