A pool umbrella in Dubai works harder than almost any other piece of outdoor furniture. It sits in direct sun for nine months, takes splash water and chlorine, and catches the afternoon shamal. Which umbrella type for a pool?

• Centre pole umbrellas beside sun loungers. The classic resort look. A 2.5 to 3 m teak or aluminium parasol between every pair of sun loungers is what you see at the Ritz-Carlton terrace we fitted with teak centre poles. See our centre pole umbrellas.

• Cantilever umbrellas over pool sofas and dining. When the pole would be in the way, a cantilever umbrella hangs the canopy from the side with 360° rotation, so one umbrella follows the sun across a daybed or a six-seat table.

What makes a pool umbrella last in Dubai

Canopy fabric. Choose solution-dyed acrylic. The colour is in the fibre, so it does not fade to pink in two summers, and it dries fast after splashing. Standard canopies are ecru beige; we also supply custom colours and logo printing for hotels and beach clubs.

Frame. Marine-grade aluminium or teak. Aluminium does not rust in chlorinated splash and is light enough to move. Teak is heavier, silvers naturally and suits a resort or Balinese scheme. Avoid painted steel near a pool; it pits within a year.

Base and fixing. Pool decks are usually tiled, so a free-standing base of 40 to 90 kg is normal for a centre pole and 100 kg or more for a cantilever. Where the deck is being built or re-laid, a flush mounting plate set into the slab removes the base entirely and is the safest option for children running past.

Wind. Our heavy-duty cantilever models are rated to about 60 km/h with the correct base; centre pole umbrellas are more stable again. Whatever the rating, close the canopy when you leave the pool for the day.
