Velvet is woven with a raised pile that's then sheared, giving it that liquid sheen and depth of colour that changes with the light. Chenille is woven from a fuzzy caterpillar-like yarn (chenille is French for caterpillar), giving a softer, more matte surface with a gentler texture. Velvet is glamour; chenille is comfort.

Daily life and durability

Chenille wins the practicality contest. Its structure hides pressure marks, resists crushing and shrugs off daily family use. Velvet shows its life more: seat cushions develop crushed patches and “bruising” where people sit, which some love as patina and others hate.
