How to care for teak furniture in Dubai's climate

Updated: Jun 27

Teak is the most durable hardwood you can choose for outdoor furniture in Dubai. Its natural oils, tight grain, and high silica content make it resistant to UV rays, humidity, salt air, and the extreme heat of UAE summers. With minimal care, Grade A teak furniture will last 20 to 30 years outdoors.

But 'minimal care' does not mean no care. This guide tells you exactly what to do — and what not to do — to keep your teak outdoor furniture looking its best in Dubai's climate.

What happens to teak outdoors in Dubai?

When left untreated outdoors, teak naturally weathers over 6 to 12 months from its initial honey-brown colour to a silver-grey patina. This is a completely natural process caused by UV exposure and does not indicate any damage to the wood. The silver-grey look is popular in coastal and minimalist design aesthetics.

If you prefer to keep the original warm honey colour, you need to oil the furniture regularly — typically once or twice a year in Dubai's climate.

How to clean teak furniture in Dubai

For regular cleaning, wipe the furniture down with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or pressure washers at full power, as these can damage the wood surface and strip the natural oils.

For a deeper clean — particularly if the furniture has gone silver-grey and you want to restore it — use a teak cleaner (available at most home improvement stores in Dubai). Apply with a soft brush, scrub along the grain, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely before oiling.

How to oil teak furniture

Use a purpose-made teak oil or teak protector, not linseed oil or general wood oil. Apply with a clean cloth or brush along the grain. Allow the first coat to absorb for 15 to 20 minutes, wipe off any excess, and allow to dry fully before applying a second coat if needed.

In Dubai, we recommend oiling once a year in winter (October to March) when temperatures are lower and humidity is more stable. Avoid oiling in the peak summer months when temperatures above 40°C can cause the oil to dry too quickly and sit on the surface rather than absorbing.

Teak care by season in Dubai

Summer (May to September): Wipe down regularly to remove dust. Move cushions inside when not in use to protect the fabric from UV fade. The teak itself is fine outdoors year-round. If you have a cover for the furniture, use it during periods when the garden is not in use — this slows the weathering process.

Winter (October to April): This is the best time to clean and oil the furniture. Apply teak oil after cleaning and allow to cure before using the outdoor space. Check all fixings and tighten any that have loosened.

Do you need to bring teak furniture inside in Dubai?

No. Grade A teak is designed to live outdoors permanently. Unlike lower-grade hardwoods, teak will not rot, warp, or crack when left outside in Dubai's climate year-round. You do not need to store it inside, cover it in summer, or take any special precautions beyond the regular cleaning and oiling described above.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I oil teak furniture in Dubai?

Once a year is sufficient for most outdoor furniture in Dubai. If you want to maintain a consistently rich honey colour, you may prefer to oil twice a year — once in October and once in March. If you are happy with the silver-grey weathered look, oiling is optional.

Can teak furniture be left in Dubai sun year-round?

Yes. Grade A Burmese teak is highly UV resistant. The surface colour will change from honey-brown to silver-grey over 6 to 12 months of outdoor exposure, but this does not affect the structural integrity or longevity of the furniture.

How do I remove white water marks from teak?

Light water marks can usually be removed by lightly sanding the affected area with fine-grade (240 grit) sandpaper along the grain, followed by a light oiling. For stubborn marks, a teak cleaner applied before sanding will help.

What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B teak?

Grade A teak comes from the heartwood of mature teak trees and contains the highest concentration of natural oils. It has a uniform golden-brown colour and is the most durable grade. Grade B teak contains more sapwood and has less oil content, making it less resistant to outdoor conditions. Always specify Grade A for outdoor furniture in Dubai.
