How to choose a dining table for your Dubai apartment or villa

The dining table is one of the most important pieces of furniture in a Dubai home. Get it right and it anchors the room, hosts every family meal and every dinner party, and improves every day of your life in the home. Get it wrong and it either dominates the room, leaves awkward gaps, or just never quite feels right.

Here is our complete guide to choosing the right dining table for your Dubai villa or apartment.
Step 1: get the size right first
The single most important decision is size. Before you think about material or style, measure your dining room carefully. The rule of thumb is: leave at least 90cm of clearance between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or obstacle. This allows chairs to be pushed back and people to walk comfortably around the table.
For seating capacity, allow 60cm of table length per person. A 180cm table seats 6 comfortably. A 240cm table seats 8 comfortably. A 300cm table seats 10.
Step 2: choose the right shape
Rectangular tables are the most versatile and the most common choice for Dubai homes. They suit long, rectangular dining rooms and work well for large family dinners. Round tables create more intimate dining experiences and work particularly well in square rooms or open-plan spaces where the table is not against a wall. Oval tables are a good compromise — they seat more people than a round table of the same footprint and have a softer, more elegant silhouette than a rectangular table.
Step 3: choose the material
Solid oak is the most popular choice for dining tables in Dubai — it is warm, durable, and works in almost every interior style. Marble and travertine tops are popular for a luxury, contemporary look and are very practical in a dining context (easy to clean, looks stunning). Microcement is increasingly popular for a minimalist, industrial aesthetic. Teak dining tables are a good choice for open-plan indoor-outdoor spaces or for homes with a coastal or tropical design aesthetic.
Step 4: decide on the base
The base has as much visual impact as the top. The most popular base styles in Dubai right now are: a central pedestal base (good for rectangular and oval tables — allows flexible seating and no leg obstruction); four solid wood legs (classic, clean, works in almost every style); a trestle base (creates a strong visual statement); and a metal base in black or brushed brass (works well with marble or microcement tops).
