Vermont solid ash dining table
The Vermont is a solid ash dining table in the quiet, heavy-timber tradition of New England farmhouse furniture: a thick plank top with a gently rolled edge, carried on four broad D-shaped legs set in from the corners so every seat has room for knees and nothing gets in the way of a chair. At 220 by 105 cm it seats eight with real elbow room and takes ten when the family comes over.
There is no apron, no stretcher and no visible fixings. The top is glued up from wide ash boards chosen for continuous grain, and the legs are shaped from solid blocks so the end grain shows the ash's open, straight figure. Everything is finished in a warm mid-brown hardwax oil that deepens the grain without hiding it, and feels like wood rather than lacquer.
Why solid ash
Ash is the wood of baseball bats, axe handles and Shaker chairs: light, tough and springy, with a long, open grain that takes stain evenly. It is harder than oak on the Janka scale, resists dents from dropped cutlery and pans, and is stable in Dubai's air-conditioned rooms. Because the grain is so straight it reads calm across a large tabletop, where oak can look busy. We use kiln-dried European or American ash in 50 mm boards.
Made to your room
The Vermont is built to order in our Al Quoz workshop, so the standard 220 cm length is a starting point. A 180 cm version seats six for an apartment dining room; 260 and 300 cm versions seat ten to twelve for a villa. The same design is made in solid oak and American walnut, and the ash can be left natural, whitewashed or stained dark. A matching ash bench, 180 or 200 cm, is available. Frequently asked questions
How many people does the Vermont seat? Eight comfortably at 220 cm, with three a side and one at each end; ten with narrower chairs or a bench. The set-in legs mean no one has a leg in the way.
Is it solid wood or veneer? Solid ash throughout. The top is glued from solid 50 mm boards and the legs are shaped from solid blocks; there is no MDF, plywood or veneer anywhere in the piece.
What are the exact dimensions? 220 cm long, 105 cm wide and 75 cm high, with a 5 cm thick top. The legs are set roughly 25 cm in from each end.
Can I have a different size? Yes. Any length between 160 and 320 cm and any width between 90 and 120 cm can be made. Price changes in proportion to the timber used.

Is ash a good wood for a dining table? Yes. Ash is harder than oak, resists dents and scratches well, and its straight grain stays calm across a large top. It is one of the best hardwoods for a table that is used every day.
Can it be made in oak or walnut instead? Yes. The same design is available in solid European oak and solid American walnut; oak is similar in price, walnut is higher.
How do I look after it? Wipe with a damp cloth, use mats or trivets under hot dishes, and re-oil once a year with a hardwax oil. Scratches can be sanded out and re-oiled locally because the finish is oil, not lacquer.
